About Me

About the photographer:
I am Johnny Koh, a senior associate engineer with a interest in macro photography. I took up photography as a result of my brother's encouragement nearly 2 years ago. Initially I used a Canon Pro90IS (consumer digicam), and later upgraded to a Canon D60 (digital SLR) for greater versatility and flexibility in taking photos.

Insects are a truly fascinating subject to photograph. The challenge is to capture the insect in its natural habitat while maintaining the correct exposure - which constantly varies with the ambient lighting. A good and realistic shot should also take into consideration the color contrast of these insects against the background. An eye for composition and control of depth of field helps to bring out the detail in insects. Also, with much observation and practice, I have captured insects in various poses that highlight their natural behaviour which can be seen in these series of shots.

Botanical Gardens , Jurong Bird Park, Mandai Zoo , Sentosa Butterfly Park and Alexandra Hospital Butterfly Trail Gardens are some of the most common places where I hone my photography skills. To constantly refine my knowledge and skill, I read photography books and magazines, and seek advice from other veterans in photography. I also participate in and browse various internet forums on photography, one of which is Clubsnap.org, where I moderate the macro and close-up photography section (forum nick: megaweb).
